“Is that a snake?”
“Where? I can’t see it.”
“Let me look…next to the light green leaf? I don’t see it, oh wait! Why yes, that is a mangrove snake,” proclaimed our dedicated docent. Nature is much cooler when interpreted by a knowledgeable steward.
“Oh look, the fish are jumping! Why?”
Instead of answering, our guide encouraged us to hypothesize.
“To get more momentum and dive down deeper?”
“To get more air?”
“To clean it’s gills?”
She suggested, “Maybe to communicate?” And then she shared, “We really don’t know.”
A romp in the woods is a mere aimless stroll without explanation and interpretation. I have been to J N Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge a few times, and every time, I am impressed by nature and those that nurture it too.
In the words of Margret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”
Thankful for the informative day!
Thanks to all who work to inform us when visiting our national refuges and parks!
P.S. Palm trees are not really trees.
