As I opened the cupboard, I spied the Café Du Monde mug. From my eclectic collection of cups, I especially chose this mug for my husband’s morning coffee. He loves this cup for no particular reason and for many reasons.
Without exception, every time I hand him this mug he smiles. After a late night at the hospital with his father, I thought he needed a smile. I can’t really explain fully why he likes the mug so much. It actually is “my” mug. My friend brought to me after one of her trips to New Orleans.
When I look at the mug, I think of my friend and look forward to when I can visit New Orleans with her. Even though I missed the friends’ trip to New Orleans last year, I hope to make it there, with her, some day.
For him, the mug makes him smile with thoughts of his own trip to New Orleans, Gene Simmons, our kids and me. Like I said, the cup runneth over!
One of my husband’s guilty pleasures was watching Gene Simmons Family Jewels, a reality show based on the mogul from the band KISS and his family. During one episode, Gene was dinning at Café Du Monde where they were using the same mugs. With exuberance my husband couldn’t contain, he riffled off a text that enclosed a picture of the television, our mug and a quirky quip. At the time, he was watching with my son as I was in Las Vegas with my daughters celebrating their graduate school graduations. Probably because he was missing us and because he finds humor in “random” things, every time he sees this mug he chuckles as he remembers the show, hanging out with his son and his own eventful trip to New Orleans.
I have to say, if it fell and broke today, both of us would be dismayed.
