In sleepy suburbia, our dining-out experiences are generally limited to national or regional chain restaurants and other conventional eateries. But, when you head into the city, avant-garde fare is on the menu.
Two of my children have decided to shed their suburban upbringing and reside in a big city. On recent visits to each of them, my husband and I have had the pleasure of dinning out with them. In keeping with their multi-cultural rearing, they each chose a place with a Hispanic hint that left tradition behind.
When we dined in Chicago, with my son, we ate tacos. Not your tia’s tacos, but delicious nonetheless. A potato and Pablano pepper taco with a sauce that offered a slight “kick” to it and a Portobello mushrooms and cheese taco garnished with pickled onions were my choosing. Definitely different and delicious!
During our visit to Milwaukee the weekend before, my daughter took us to a new empanadas emporium. Similarly to the taco dalliance, we had exotic empanadas. I had a veggie and cheese empanada that was quite good. I also sampled a delightful chicken and pineapple one, and in keeping with the St. Patrick’s Day season, they offered a Ruben empanada. Exceptionally exclusive and enjoyable!
I am keen on my neighborhood and close proximity to work, but it is fun to visit and of course eat in the city, and I am always glad to have an excuse to go.
